The Union for
African Population Studies (UAPS) is a pan African non profit
scientific organization whose main aim is to promote the
scientific study of population in Africa. It was established
through the initiative of the United Nations Economic Commission
for Africa (ECA) by the Third General Conference of African
Demographers, Statisticians and Planners held in Addis Ababa in
March 1984. Based in the ECA in the beginning, the Headquarters
of UAPS was transferred to Dakar in 1987. UAPS has been given
the status of an international NGO by the Senegalese government
since 1989 but has not yet been able to obtain diplomatic
status.
UAPS
is open to all
African or Africanist researchers and to all institutions
working in the field of population and development in Africa. It
currently has a membership of about 1,200 members from Africa,
Europe, North America and Asia. It has two types of memberships:
individual and institutional.
Individual
members are researchers belonging to Universities, Research
Centres and other Institutions (national and international) of
Higher Learning.
Institutional members are partners (Africans or
Africanists) that collaborate with UAPS in undertaking its
various activities in the different regions of Africa.
